2. Welcoming Visitors

  • We provide training, uniforms and support to the Weyfarers so they are equipped to meet and greet visitors to the town
  • We arrange for our Weyfarers to meet and greet passengers from every cruise ship to visit Portland Port during the summer months.
  • We encourage more people to become Weyfarers so the town is well supported
  • We provide tourist information in the BID office, in hotels and around the town, supported by Weyfarers.

Why do we need a BID?

In an ideal world we might look to local councils to provide additional services in order to raise standards. However, they could only do this by either attracting more funding from central government or by raising revenue through higher local taxation. In the current climate it is unrealistic to expect local authorities to go down either of these routes. Therefore, if we want additional services and improvements above what is currently provided, plus the opportunity to market and promote Weymouth to a greater degree than ever before, we will have to join together to help pay for them.

Please see the Business Plan (page 9) for more information

Do I have to pay?

If your premises is within the designated Weymouth BID area (see Business Plan map, page 27) and your rateable value is £6,000 or more, you are required to pay a BID levy of 1.5% of RV (see how do I pay for details)

How do I pay?

Weymouth BID Levy is set at 1.5% of your rateable value, and is invoiced on 1st September each year, with the total year's levy payable at the time of invoice.

Your invoice will be sent from the Weymouth & Portland District Council, and the levy payment is made to them. The council acts as an agent to collect the levy monies on behalf of Weymouth BID.

Instructions on how to make the payment are set out on the back of the invoice. Your eight digit levy payment account number is on the front of the invoice (usually starts with 020)

PLEASE NOTE your levy payment should not be paid into your business rates account. Payment can usually be made via the council's automatic telephone payment system on 0845 30 10 204.

If you need to speak to someone about difficulties paying your levy, you should contact Weymouth BID on 01305 779410 or email us on info@weymouthbid.co.uk

How is Weymouth BID run?

Weymouth BID Ltd is a Not-for-Profit Organisation registered as a limited company at Companies House.

It follows the strict legal protocol thus required.

Weymouth BID holds an AGM public meeting and has an unpaid Board of Directors which includes an elected Chair and Treasurer.

The Operational Team consists of:

In addition to the unpaid Board Members, there are a number of highly trained volunteers, or Weyfarers who present the face of the BID, meeting and greeting visitors to the town as well as getting to know local business owners, while delivering leaflets and information about forthcoming events.

Can I go to meetings?

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is open to BID Levy Payers.

Board meetings can only be attended by Board Members, the BID Manager, and others by special invitation from the BID Manager (usually for the purposes of making a presentation, etc.)

Anyone can arrange to see the BID Manager on an informal basis to discuss issues or ideas relating to Weymouth.

Your thoughts can be presented at Board Meetings by a Board Member.
