Making final preparations for folk festival

With only a few days to go before Weymouth plays host to the Wessex Folk Festival, organisers and sponsors have been making final preparations for this year’s event, which takes place around the quayside from June 1 to 3.

Mike Donovan, who chairs the festival’s organising committee, said: “We got together to thank representatives of the Wessex Folk Nite, who fundraise for us throughout the year, and also our main sponsors – Weymouth BID, Dream Cottages and The King’s Arms and Boot Inn. Without their hard work and financial support, and the support of many other local businesses, we wouldn’t be able to put on this great event each year for the people of Weymouth.”

Thousands of people are expected to fill the streets around the south side of Weymouth harbour next weekend to hear leading folk musicians perform on two stages. Local favourites State of Undress kick things off at 11.00 am on Saturday on the Hope Square stage. Lonesome Stampede, Gadarene, Reg Meuross, Wild Willy Barrett, Glymjack and Gaz Brookfield are among the line-up of free music between then and 6.00 pm on Sunday.

There will also be 28 colourful morris dance sides adding to the atmosphere around the festival site and a programme of free workshops. For those who want to carry on into the evening, there’s a range of pub sessions on all three nights and a free Barn Dance on Saturday in Hope Square Church. Curtain raiser sessions on Friday (June 1) start at 2.00 pm in The King’s Arms.
