News for all businesses from Dorset Police

Weymouth BID have been talking to Inspector Barry Gosling about working together to support levy payers and he will be meeting the BID board periodically to provide a policing update, listen to members’ concerns and we intend to continue working collaboratively to reduce business crime.

However, we have some advice for all businesses who experience crime, as we all have a responsibility to protect ourselves and be proactive:

  • If you notice a group or individuals committing offences, then the advice is to report it to the police at an early stage via 999 or 101 and provide as much detail as you can to assist with identification of any suspects.
  • One of the best preventative tactics is communication, therefore Shop Watch, Hotel Watch and Pub Watch are key to creating a toxic environment for individuals and groups coming into the town intent on committing offences or causing disorder. – Join these groups if at all possible!
  • The Police would also like to encourage levy payers not to ‘suffer in silence’ and encourage you to talk to the police about the issues that affect you and your business. This can be done via emailing enquiries@dorset.pnn.police.uk, attending one of the local engagement events advertised on the police website, stopping an officer in the street on patrol or through the BID.
  • AskNED is a Non-Emergency Directory. It is a service that combines the questions that members of the public have asked with contact details of those that can help.

The Weymouth policing team have also committed to the #100daysofsummer campaign and so will have a significant presence in the town centre at our ASB and crime hotspots. This also means that they will be close by should any business in the town centre call for assistance.

Inspector Gosling is looking to organise regular surgeries for levy payers at the BID office after the summer season. Details to come soon.
