From Georgian sea bathing to neon-filled 1980s weekends, Weymouth’s timeless charm takes centre stage in the new #WeyBackWhen campaign.
Weymouth has been welcoming visitors for centuries – ever since King George III made sea bathing and ‘taking the sea air’ fashionable in 1789. Today, the tradition lives on, with swimmers still braving the waters for health, relaxation, and a touch of nostalgia.
This year, We Are Weymouth (BID) is inviting everyone to step back in time with #WeyBackWhen – a celebration of the town through the decades. The campaign captures Weymouth’s enduring appeal, from sun-soaked family holidays to wartime homecomings, and from celebrity visits to its iconic coastal backdrops.
Featuring a stunning collection of images and personal stories, #WeyBackWhen shines a light on what makes Weymouth so special – the memories, the scenery, the people, and the unmistakable seaside atmosphere.
Era Weekends – Step Into the Past
To bring history to life, We Are Weymouth is partnering with local businesses, including Weymouth Pavilion and popular pubs and bars, to host Era Weekends throughout 2025. Known for its love of celebrations and costumes, Weymouth will see visitors and locals alike dust off their flares, embrace neon, and relive – or discover – the spirit of past decades.
The first Era Weekend kicks off with an 1980s extravaganza, featuring:
-
Classic 80s films
-
Anthems from the decade
-
Fancy dress in true retro style
Dawn Rondeau-Irvine, Chief Operations Officer at We Are Weymouth, said:
“We Are Weymouth has built a fantastic community, with families returning year after year. The themes in their stories are always the same – Weymouth is about family time, stunning scenery, lively events, and great food. It’s been wonderful to hear these stories and now bring them to life with our Era Weekends. We’re launching with an 80s celebration – because, after all, no one puts Weymouth in the corner!”
A Year of Nostalgia
Throughout 2025, expect more Era Weekends, photo exhibitions, and storytelling moments across the town. Whether you have decades of Weymouth memories or you’re visiting for the first time, #WeyBackWhen is a chance to be part of the story.
